With the release of “Creature,” The Hellflowers have the perfect love song for lovers of all things horror-related. It’s a punchy, high-energy punk song reminiscent of the first wave of punk bands like the Ramones, while still mixing in the rawness that only garage rock can bring.
The lead singer, Christina Eskew, also brings a rich yet cool vocal tone that delivers the tongue-in-cheek lyrics with playful charm. The inspiration came from Eskew’s obsession with the classic monster movie Creature from the Black Lagoon.
“I am obsessed with the Creature from the Black Lagoon, so I thought it was high time I wrote a love song about him,” Eskew said. “I’m stoked it will be out just in time for Halloween.”
With October here, it is the perfect song to spice up the Halloween playlist. It's fresh and a nice deviation from the same old spooky-adjacent tracks. It pulls the listener into the horror fantasy of the irresistible pull of an unattainable love.
The Los Angeles-based band was formed in 2015 by Christina and Matt Eskew. The band follows DIY DNA embedded in punk and its subculture. Matt Eskew directed the matching music video.
In September, the band also released a single called “Wild Ones.” A song focused on women being defiant in the face of others trying to take away their autonomy. Both songs offer a taste of the band's third album, “Haunted,” which will be released sometime in February of next year.
The band has an impressive touring history, performing in the U.S. and abroad. Performing twice at the Rebellion Festival in Blackpool and shared stages with bands like Missing Persons and Save Ferris. Their song “Come On, Let’s Dance!” was also featured in the 2017 season finale of Vanderpump Rules.
Catch The Hellflowers live at their upcoming concerts, starting with Alex's Bar in Long Beach, CA on Nov. 1, followed by a performance at Mabuhay Gardens in San Francisco on Nov. 6 and at Bar 10 at Corbin Bowl in Tarzana, CA on Nov. 13.
