When you make your way to Chase Sullivan’s Instagram, there’ll be multiple posts showcasing Sullivan, guitar in hand, sitting in front of a Donnie Darko-esque giant bunny statue (though nowhere near as menacing). Click, listen to the song and be brought right back to the ground.
Marked by a modest guitar melody and soothing vocals, the bunny is no more than a Trojan horse of grandeur and aesthetic, while the true gift is in Sullivan’s words and voice, forcing you to reckon with loves gone and loves to come.
Perhaps it’s because he, in his own words, “Refused to write love songs,” that when finally tackling the subject, he got it right.
But even though lusting for someone can be hard, or come with discoveries of self-doubt, it doesn’t mean it can’t come with whimsy.
‘Stop watching my hands, stare at the wall; See the shadows, let yourself unfold,’ he says.
Driven by the idea of making shadow puppets hand-in-hand with the person your heart is bursting for elicits imagery of fun and excitement, and that’s where Sullivan’s writing shines through strongest. It’s recognition that maybe putting yourself in that position of fear, even metaphorical nakedness, can unveil moments of magic.
“This moment wasn’t fleeting; it was something to look forward to,” Sullivan announces in that moment of revelation.
“Bunny” is about bringing down the walls external and internal. It serves as 3:36 of therapy and an acceptance that sometimes we need to run toward the bunny and not away from it.
The song will serve as the opener to Sullivan’s upcoming EP, The Garden, releasing Aug. 21, which one can imagine will be full of metaphorical bunnies running around.
