Mexico City Heartbreak’s debut album, Luz Infinita, is a collection of eleven moving, personal, transcendent tracks. Mexico City Heartbreak is a deeply personal musical project. Frontman Rudy Torres shares that the band name comes from a true story he heard about heartbreak. He spoke with us about the irony of experiencing such a painful emotion in such a beautiful place.
“What a beautiful city to have your heart completely obliterated.”
Rooted in East LA, Mexico City Heartbreak’s sound has been influenced by Spanish rock. Growing up here, Torres met friends who introduced him to artists like Mana and Juanes, foundational influences on the band’s sound today.
Though recently released, Luz Infinita has already lived various lives. A labor of love, the album was created and fine-tuned over the course of three years. At its inception, the album seemed to center on a person who doesn’t feel like themselves as they catastrophize their relationship. This idea couldn’t have seemed farther from Torres’ perspective of reality at the time. What we listen to now has become a testament to the fluidity of living and loving. There is beauty in even the most unconventional places and situations, always an “infinite light.”
Luz Infinita is a love letter of hope and perseverance in the face of heartbreak, loneliness, and the general disparities of life. Lyrics of aching void on tracks like “Recuerdos De Ti” are sung in soft melodies over soft rock guitar and warm synths. All these features work together to create a track that can intensify your feelings of heartbreak one moment or serve as a noise of fond reflection another time.
There is a lot to look forward to from Mexico City Heartbreak. Not yet released, Luz Infinita is accompanied by a documentary film showing what it’s like to be a musician in LA. The album will also be re-released later in the year with four additional songs.
Keep up with Mexico City Heartbreak to find out where you can hear Luz Infinita live this summer on tour.
