Almost like it was just in time for Toy Story 5, Holden Miller’s comeback to the music scene with “Buzz Lightyear Ego Death” is just the beginning of this new era. Self-produced, this new single is just a sneak peek of his new EP FALL, with Style. Although one of five songs, “Buzz Lightyear Ego Death” is such a strong single and segue into the EP.
"Buzz Lightyear Ego Death" is exactly what it sounds like in the name. What happens when you realize you’re one of a million? Miller knows just how to tell a story through the lyrics of this song, but while telling the story, he conveys the feeling and emotions behind it.
Throughout "Buzz Lightyear Ego Death," it’s filled with vulnerability from Buzz’s point of view and his emotions of self-realization that he is just one doll of many. Feeling like you’re not special, and feeling like you don't have any unique features that make you stick out from everyone else. From the outside looking in, we have a better perspective on it, and from watching Toy Story, knowing Buzz’s story, it’s almost easier to understand those feelings. Although knowing in the movie it all works out for Buzz, you can’t help but dwell on those lyrics and really wrap your head around it.
Despite being one of Miller’s first releases in two years, this song is an insane comeback. Not only announcing the release of an EP with the new single, but also being able to put this emotion behind one song about none other than Buzz Lightyear. And although the song is about Buzz Lightyear, ego death isn’t just exclusive to Buzz; because of that, the depth of the song goes so much farther.
Even though throughout the song we hear the pang of realization for Buzz Lightyear, we do get to hear the song ending on a happier note. With the lyrics “I’m the ranger they'll talk about,” we have hope at the end that even if Buzz feels like he is one in a million, it’s not getting in the way of being different from the rest and writing his own happy ending.
Listen to “Buzz Lightyear Ego Death” here, and watch out for new music to come from Holden Miller soon!
